Basic Symptoms of Spinal Stenosis That You Should Notice Early
Spinal stenosis also known as spinal canal and neural foramina stenosis. It is a condition when a person faces a narrowed canal and puts force on nerves passing through it. Unfortunately, its symptoms often develop slowly over time and are often dismissed by physicians as general age-related issues. Sadly, this can lead to misdiagnosis.
This
blog will go over the major warning signs of spinal stenosis and what you
should look out for. We will go over your spinal stenosis surgery
options to help improve your spine health.
Symptoms
of Neck Spinal Stenosis
Spinal
stenosis of the neck is formally known as “cervical stenosis.” The unnatural
narrowing of the spinal canal in the neck causes two separate issues:
1.
Cervical Radiculopathy – compression of the nerve roots that branch off the
spinal canal
2.
Cervical Myelopathy – compression of the spinal cord itself
Numbness/pins and
needles/crawling sensations in arms and hands, often followed by weakness in
hands/arms caused by spinal cord compression (usually manifesting itself by
hand clumsiness and loss of fine motor skills such as buttoning shirts or
writing clearly) from compressed spinal cord. Also, difficulties walking (gait)
and maintaining balance. Such as feeling like you’re falling over because the
squeezed nerves cannot relay balanced messages throughout your body.
Symptoms
of Spinal Stenosis in Lower Back – Where Do You Feel Them?
“Lumbar
stenosis” is the official term for spinal stenosis localized to your lower
back. Lumbar spinal stenosis symptoms will usually appear in the lower half of
your body: legs, buttocks, and feet.
A
large hallmark symptom of lumbar spinal stenosis is what we call “neurogenic
claudication“— pain, cramping, heavy or weak legs with activity such as walking
or standing that typically resolves when you sit or lean forward. Neurogenic
claudication is caused by nerve compression.
